From Discovery to Career Opportunities: Manufacturing Day 2026

October 2, 2026

On October 2, 2026, students and jobseekers in the Pittsburgh region visited Mill 19, the ARM Institute’s shared facility with Carnegie Mellon University’s Manufacturing Futures Institute and Catalyst Connection (add hyperlinks for both)  for Manufacturing Day. Through hands-on demonstrations, conversations with industry professionals, and opportunities to connect with employers, the event showcased the technology, people, and career pathways shaping the future of manufacturing.

Manufacturing Day, or MFG Day, is a national initiative created by the Manufacturing Institute. This event seeks to bring manufacturing careers to light by connecting individuals of all ages with in-demand, growing career pathways in manufacturing. The event is formally hosted on the first Friday in October with organizations across the nation opening the doors to their facilities.

For our 2026 MFG Day event, the ARM Institute, CMU MFI, and Catalyst Connection collaborated to bring together high school students from across the region for a day of learning, robotics demonstrations, and conversations about careers in manufacturing. The afternoon then shifted its focus to a job fair, connecting jobseekers with employers looking for talent. Together, the day’s activities showcased the many ways people can explore, enter, and build careers in today’s manufacturing industry.

Students Get Hands-On with Modern Manufacturing

For students, Manufacturing Day provided an opportunity to step outside the classroom and experience manufacturing technology up close. Throughout the event, students explored robotics, automation, physical AI, and other technologies used in modern manufacturing. They had a chance to see robots in action, ask questions, interact with industry professionals, and learn more about the people and skills behind today’s advanced manufacturing systems.

Hands-on experiences like these help students connect what they’re learning in school with real-world applications. A lesson about engineering, computer science, or mathematics takes on a new meaning when students can see how these skills are used to program a robot, solve a manufacturing challenge, or improve a production process. This experience also offered an opportunity to introduce students to career possibilities that they may not have considered. The hands-on nature of the day gave students an opportunity to be curious and begin to understand that manufacturing is not a single career path, but an industry that needs people with a wide variety of interests and skills.

Students Learn How Their Interests Connect to a Manufacturing Career

While robotics and automation are changing how products are made, people remain at the center of designing, programming, maintaining, and improving these technologies. For students, that means that there are many different ways to build a career in the industry, and Manufacturing Day gave them the chance to see some of these possibilities for themselves. By bringing students directly into an environment filled with advanced technology and the people who work with it every day, the event makes manufacturing careers more visible and accessible to the next generation of talent.

Early exposure to these opportunities is an important first step. While students don’t necessarily need to have their entire career mapped out while they’re in high school, events like these can simply give them new ideas and introduce them to new career pathways.

Jobseekers Connect to Hiring Manufacturers & Open Roles

While the morning focused on introducing students to the world of manufacturing, the afternoon brought a different group together: jobseekers and employers.

The Manufacturing Day job fair, organized by Catalyst Connection, gave people actively looking for their next career opportunity a chance to connect directly with hiring companies in the manufacturing space. Job seekers learned about available positions, met hiring teams, and learned more about the skills employers need. For participating companies, the job fair provided a great opportunity to meet potential candidates and showcase the range of careers available within modern manufacturing.

While this event gave regional manufacturers the opportunity to connect to qualified talent, the ARM Institute’s employer resources on RoboticsCareer.org helps manufacturers find their next hire all year! Manufacturing Day Connects the Dots

Although students and jobseekers experienced different parts of the event, both activities highlighted the same important goal of connecting people with opportunities in manufacturing.

For students, that connection starts with awareness. Seeing advanced technologies at work and talking with people working in the industry helps young people begin to imagine themselves working in manufacturing.

For jobseekers, that connection powers their goals even sooner. Meeting hiring manufacturers and learning about available opportunities transforms interest in manufacturing into a career.

Events like Manufacturing Day demonstrate the importance of bringing industry, education, and the workforce together. By creating opportunities to learn, explore, and connect, organizations across the manufacturing community can help build a strong workforce for tomorrow.
